OPTIMAL GLOBAL PLANNING TOOL FOR FREIGHT TRANSPORTATION
Presented at Port of the Future Conference 2026
Session Overview
Speaker: Nawaf Nazir, Staff Research Scientist, Pacific Northwest National Laboratories (PNNL)
Intermodal Freight Transportation accounts for a meaningful share of U.S. emissions, and that share is expected to grow with e-commerce. This presentation introduces a decision-support tool that combines the Global Change Analysis Model (GCAM) with multi-modal route planning to evaluate how fuels such as biofuels, e-fuels, hydrogen, ammonia, and battery electric can support cost-effective transition.
The tool combines rail, road, and maritime container shipping models to identify optimal fuel-mix choices, freight modes, routes, and associated cost and emissions outcomes across the full intermodal system.
