DRAYAGE DECISIONS – FUEL OR CHARGE?

Presented at Port of the Future Conference 2026

Drayage, Alternative Fuels & Infrastructure

Session Overview

Moderator: Alfred Henson, PhD, Assistant Professor of Marine Transportation, Texas Southern University

Panelists: Kelly Skiba, Regional Sales Manager – Electrification, U.S. Energy; Jim Bunsey, Senior Manager, Business Development, Propane Education and Research Council (PERC)

As trucking companies transition to alternative fuels such as electricity, hydrogen, propane, and methanol, they must evaluate a range of factors including market trends, technological advances in heavy-duty engines, and the cost of low-carbon fuels.

A critical challenge in this transition is the availability and accessibility of fueling and charging infrastructure. Ports play a key role in ensuring that these facilities are available and capable of supporting regional drayage operations.

This panel explores how operators and ports are making decisions around fuel versus charging strategies, and what infrastructure investments are needed to enable a successful transition.
