Session
In 2026, The Port of Long Beach has launched the Clean Fuel Bunkering Challenge, a first-of-its-kind $1 million incentive for the first oceangoing vessel to refuel with methanol on a commercial scale at its harbor. The initiative aims to:
– Jumpstart North American methanol bunkering and create a viable market for clean marine fuels;
– Offset the higher cost of methanol refueling compared to conventional bunker fuel.
– Encourage investment in cleaner shipping by demonstrating feasibility and market; and
– Support the port’s broader strategy to phase out emissions from all port-related activities and promote next-generation maritime fuels
